The first round of games have taken place, and on the whole it seems that the push notifications are a welcome addition.

I just wanted to post this to give you an opportunity to send me your feedback. I’ve had mostly very positive feedback on Twitter and a couple of people saying that they did not get any notifications.

So a little on how they work.

Firstly, you need version 3.5.2 which is the latest available in the App Store at the time of writing.

Secondly, you need to launch the app and it’ll register for notifications for your squad members.

Thirdly, there is nothing more for you to do.

Push notifications rely on a single persistent connection to Apple’s servers, this saves your battery and bandwidth.

For my part, I create the notifications relating to goals, assists, cards, pens saved or missed.. and they are forwarded to Apple.

As far as the timeliness of my system sending the notifications they will be a maximum of 1 minutes behind the FPL’s stats changing. The FPL stats changing are mostly within a minute or two of the actual event. From there we are reliant on successful delivery across the Internet. Failed attempts will be re-tried, I’m not sure how often Apple attempt it though. I do know that they will only resend the latest notification for a device.. they will not queue them and retry so there’s the possibility of missing some.

So, Push Notifications in this implementation will not be terribly timely. Listening to or watching the game live will demonstrate the inherent delay.

Having said all that though and given the very low scoring start to the weekend I am very happy with some of the early feedback and also screenshots.

More games tomorrow so we’ll see how that goes.

Moving forward, this stuff can be added to without submitting a new version to Apple. I’ll do some work on the injury side of things.

Please add your comments for how it went for you, if it didn’t go too well then as much information as possible.. I do suspect that the quality of connectivity plays a big part in the perceived success of this new feature.

Cheers!
